The Wood Below

A boy falls into the Pit

A boy falls a long way, into a wood at the bottom of a pit, and finds a mask in the leaves. He puts it on, and it blazes.

He has forgotten the evening he fell from. Something down here remembers it.

“Easy. You fell a long way, little one.”

The Watcher
The mask in the leaves at the bottom of the wood: a white face lying in the fallen leaves, lit by its own faint violet light.

Twenty faces

Master the masks

Masks are found cracked in the Pit, and the Mask-maker mends them. Every one carries its own blade, skill and special, and every one changes how you fight.

Break the wardens

At the end of every floor a warden waits. Learn its tells, dodge at the last moment, and break it. What it is about to hit is marked on the ground first. Whether you are standing there is up to you.

Between runs

Death is not the end

Fall, and you wake in the Keep with your souls and finds. Turn souls into Renown at the bonfire, learn from the Upgrade Book, free the keepers caged in the Pit, and go down again stronger.

  • The bonfire. Feed it your souls; every level of Renown brings something new.
  • The Upgrade Book. Lessons that stay learnt, run after run.
  • Three keepers. The Archivist, the Mask-maker and the Armourer, each caged somewhere below.
  • 91 feats, a daily descent, bounties and a journal, so every run counts.
The Watcher, hooded and masked, holds up his lantern beside the fire in the Keep; the boy looks up at him.

“The lanterns here never go out. I checked. It took a long time to be sure.”

Uncover the truth

In the Keep, the Watcher waits with his lantern. Each warden's echo gives back a piece of the evening the boy has forgotten.

“Between. It is the kindest word I have for it.”

“Up there it is still that same moment. Down here you have time.”

“A mask is what someone leaves when they finally get out of the Pit. The way they fought stays in it.”

“Because the way out is at the bottom. It always has been.”

“I watch the pit. That is the whole job. Some days it watches back.”

Six pieces of his evening are hidden on this page, as faint lights. Find them all and the Great Door opens. The rest of the evening is still down in the Pit.
